To give and understand information about entertainment, you need to be able to:

  • use key verbs in the present tense to say what you read, watch and listen to

  • use different tenses to say what you have or will read, watch and listen to

  • use opinion phrases to discuss TV, books, films and music

  • use the adjective ‘favourite’ to describe TV, books, films and music

  • use a relative pronoun to give more information about something or someone you have already mentioned

  • Flamenco is a style of dance and music which comes from the south of Spain

  • There are many different styles of flamenco and it is an important part of Spanish culture

  • Dancers clap their hands and stamp their feet to convey the emotion of flamenco

  • There are other types of dance and music from different regions in Spain, e.g. aurresku, jota and Sevillanas

A man and woman perform a flamenco dance; he wears a black suit with red accents, and she wears a red dress with ruffled sleeves and skirt.
  • Use opinion phrases to say what you like and dislike

  • In English we can use the -ing form of the verb or the infinitive after opinion phrases (‘I like watching’, ‘I like to watch’), but in Spanish we always use the infinitive:

    • Me gusta ver la televisión

      I like watching TV

    • Me encanta leer las novelas

      I love reading novels

    • No me gusta escuchar música

      I don’t like listening to music

    • Odio cantar

      I hate singing

    • Prefiero ir al cine

      I prefer going to the cinema

  • Use the adjective favorito to mean ‘favourite’, and make sure it agrees with the noun:

masculine singular

  • Leer (to read), ver (to watch) and escuchar (to listen) are very important verbs for this topic

  • Use them in different tenses to talk about entertainment, and remember there are some irregular forms:
