The metre, symbolised by "m," is the basic unit of length in the metric system. It is used to measure how long something is, and provides a standard way of telling how big things are in science and in everyday life. For example, if you measure the length of your classroom or the height of a door, you will likely use metres. One metre is equal to 100 centimetres, so it's easy to convert between these two units when solving problems in maths.
Understanding metres is important because it's a common measurement you will use in many areas of study. This especially includes GCSE Maths, where you'll work with various units and calculations.
