Abstinence, in the context of GCSE Biology, refers to the deliberate choice to refrain from engaging in certain activities, particularly sexual intercourse. It is often discussed as a method of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Abstinence is 100% effective at preventing these outcomes when practised consistently. It may be chosen for personal, moral, cultural, or health reasons. Understanding abstinence is important in sexual health education, as it represents an effective option for managing reproductive health.
