A pandemic is a type of disease outbreak that spreads across many countries or continents and affects a large number of people. It happens when a new infectious disease emerges and spreads easily from person to person, often because people have little or no immunity to it. An example of a pandemic is the COVID-19 outbreak that began in 2019. Pandemics can cause serious health problems, disrupt daily life, and require international efforts to control their spread. Understanding pandemics helps explain how infectious diseases spread and how they can be managed on a global scale.
