Instructions for the preparation, combining and shaping of foods might include:
Preparation Method | Description | Example |
---|---|---|
Roll | Food is flattened and spread out during preparation Food can be combined and shaped into a roll, | Pastry can be rolled out on a flat surface Meat can be added to rolled out pastry before rolling it up to produce a sausage roll |
Wrap | Food can be wrapped in another food type | Sausages wrapped in bacon or sushi wrapped in seaweed |
Skewer | Food is held together by a long skewer, usually made of metal or wood | Meat or vegetable skewers |
Mix | Food is combined with other ingredients | The ingredients for spaghetti Bolognese are mixed together during cooking |
Coat | Food has another food coating on the outside, This can create a different texture or appearance, | Fish cakes coated in bread crumbs Coating a cake in icing provides moisture while also changing the way the cake looks |
Shape and bind | Wet mixtures can be combined and made into specific shapes | Falafels, burgers, fish cakes or meatballs |
Layer | Food can be combined by layering with other food | Lasagne and fish pie |

Note that mixing foods together brings a risk of cross-contamination by harmful microorganisms, so safe handling of high risk foods is essential
