Vertical erosion is a type of erosion that occurs in rivers and streams and is characterised by the downward wearing away of the riverbed. Through forces like abrasion and hydraulic action, the riverbed gets deeper. It happens when the river has a lot of energy, usually in its upper course, where the slope is steep. Vertical erosion is important for shaping the landscape and is one of the key processes in the formation of V-shaped river valleys.
