Shell - GCSE Physics Definition

In GCSE Physics, the term "shell" often refers to the energy level that electrons occupy around the nucleus of an atom. These shells can be thought of as layers or paths that electrons move in, and each one can hold a specific number of electrons. The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second can hold up to 8, and so on. When an electron gains or loses energy, it can move between these shells in a process known as electron transition.
