Speed - GCSE Physics Definition

In GCSE Physics, 'speed' refers to how quickly something is moving, and it is a measure of distance covered in a given time. It is a scalar quantity, meaning it only has magnitude, and does not take into account the direction. Speed is typically measured in metres per second (m/s), and can be calculated using the formula:
speed = distance ÷ time
Where:
distance is how far the object has travelled (measured in metres, m)
time is the duration taken (measured in time, s)
Understanding speed is essential for analysing motion and helps in distinguishing it from velocity, which additionally considers the direction of travel.
