Sinusoidal Functions & Graphs (DP IB Applications & Interpretation (AI)): Revision Note

Sinusoidal Functions & Graphs

What are the key features of sinusoidal graphs?

  • A sinusoidal graph is of the form

    • space y equals a sin left parenthesis b x right parenthesis plus d

    • space y equals a cos left parenthesis b x right parenthesis plus d

  • The y-intercept is at the point where x equals 0

    • left parenthesis 0 comma space d right parenthesis for space y equals a sin left parenthesis b x right parenthesis plus d

    • left parenthesis 0 comma space a space plus space d right parenthesis for space y equals a cos left parenthesis b x right parenthesis plus d

  • The period of the graph is the length of the interval of a full cycle

    • This is fraction numerator 360 degree over denominator b end fraction

  • The maximum value is y space equals space a space plus space d

    • You can find this by letting sin open parentheses b x close parentheses equals 1 or cos open parentheses b x close parentheses equals 1

  • The minimum value is y space equals space minus a space plus space d

    • You can find this by letting sin open parentheses b x close parentheses equals negative 1 or cos open parentheses b x close parentheses equals negative 1

  • The principal axis is the horizontal line halfway between the maximum and minimum values

    • This is y space equals space d

  • The amplitude is the vertical distance from the principal axis to the maximum value

    • This is the value of a

Graph of sine and cosine functions showing amplitude, period, and vertical shift with equations y=asin(bx)+d and y=acos(bx)+d, in red and blue.
