Introduction to Logarithms

What are logarithms?

  • A logarithm is the inverse of a power

    • If a to the power of x equals b then x equals log subscript a open parentheses b close parentheses where a greater than 0, b greater than 0, a not equal to 1

      • It turns the power, x, into the subject of the equation

Examiner Tips and Tricks

The relationship a to the power of x equals b space left right double arrow space x equals log subscript a b is given in the formula booklet.

  • The number a is called the base of the logarithm

    • log subscript a left parenthesis b right parenthesis is pronounced "log base a of b"

    • e.g. log subscript 5 125 asks "what power of 5 gives you 125?"

      • The answer is 3, as 5 cubed equals 125

      • so log subscript 5 125 equals 3

  • Two important cases are:

    • The natural logarithm, ln space x equals log subscript straight e open parentheses x close parentheses

      • where straight e is the mathematical constant 2.718…

      • often called Euler's number

    • Logarithms of base 10, log space x equals log subscript 10 open parentheses x close parentheses

      • They are written with no base

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Your GDC will have a ln space x button (base straight e), a log space x button (base 10), and a log subscript a b button to put in your own base.

Why use logarithms?

  • Equations where x is in the power are called exponential equations

    • Some can be solved easily by inspection (seeing the answer)

      • For example, 2 to the power of x equals 8 is solved by seeing that x equals 3

    • Others cannot be seen

      • For example, 2 to the power of x equals 10

    • These must be solved using logarithms by making x the subject

      • 2 to the power of x equals 10 means x equals log subscript 2 10

      • Type this into your GDC to get x equals 3.321928...

Worked Example

Solve the following equations:

i) x equals log subscript 3 27,

ii) 2 to the power of x equals 21.4, giving your answer to 3 s.f.
