What is a house style?

  • A house style is when a business consistently applies visual design elements across different media to make them recognisable

  • A house style is a set of guidelines that ensures a consistent brand identity

  • Design elements include:

    • Logo

    • Colours

    • Writing style (fonts)

    • Layout

  • House style can be used on:

    • Letterheads

    • Websites

    • Posters

    • Presentations

    • Advertising

Purpose of a house style

  • The primary purpose is to create a consistent and recognisable image for the company

  • It makes the company's documents and products instantly identifiable to clients or customers

  • This consistency also streamlines the creation of new documents within the company by:

    • Reducing time and cost spent setting up and formatting documents

    • Reducing the risk of errors

Worked Example

The Medical Authority creates many different types of documents including letters and memos. Each of them is produced using its corporate house style.
Explain why corporate house styles are required.
