The spiritual and physical goals of Hajj

  • Hajj is the Muslim pilgrimage that starts and ends in Makkah (Mecca)

    • It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam

    • Hajj is compulsory for Muslims to undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are healthy enough and can afford to do so

  • Pilgrims have certain spiritual and physical goals in undertaking Hajj

Spiritual goals

  • The main spiritual goal of pilgrims undertaking Hajj is to fulfil one of the Five Pillars of Islam

  • It is intended to purify the soul, wipe away sins and strengthen the faith of a Muslim

  • Wearing the ihram and performing the same actions in the same order is a sign that all Muslims are equal in the eyes of Allah

  • Participating in the rituals of Hajj helps to demonstrate submission to Allah’s will

  • There are opportunities throughout Hajj to seek repentance and hope for Allah’s mercy

  • Successfully completing Hajj gives a person a fresh start, as their sins have been forgiven

Physical goals

  • Completing Hajj involves successfully enduring physical and mental challenges, which shows endurance and stamina

  • The physical challenges involved ensure that pilgrims are connected across the Ummah in enduring shared hardships

The spiritual and physical challenges of Hajj

  • Pilgrims face certain physical and spiritual challenges in undertaking Hajj

Physical challenges

  • The Hajj is physically demanding. The distances pilgrims are expected to walk, often barefoot or in sandals, and the high temperatures found in Makkah mean that pilgrims must be fit enough to participate

  • The pilgrimage sites can become very crowded, with millions gathering in tight spaces, particularly when circling the Ka’aba

    • The overcrowding can lead to the threat of stampedes

    • It can also lead to illness and heatstroke

  • There are health risks when so many people from across the world gather in such close proximity

    • This leads to an increased risk of transmission of respiratory diseases. Pilgrims are recommended to protect themselves through immunisation before travelling to participate

  • The harsh conditions are challenging to pilgrims, who are expected to spend some of the nights outdoors with minimal comfort

Spiritual challenges

  • Maintaining focus on the spiritual intent behind Hajj can be a challenge amid the large crowds and physical challenges, which can be a distraction

    • Some people post selfies on social media during the Hajj, which shows the difficulties of remaining focused only on Allah and their spiritual journey

  • The emotional strain of participating in an event that is a once-in-a-lifetime experience can be a challenge to many

  • The trials faced during the pilgrimage test a pilgrim’s self-restraint and humility

  • It can be difficult for people to ensure that they don’t forget the lessons learned on Hajj when they return to their busy lives

  • Overcoming these challenges strengthens Muslims’ faith further; through the process, they learn to be patient and self-disciplined
