What is the role of the Rabbi?

  • In Jewish communities, the Rabbi is a respected and educated person who has studied and understands the sacred texts and traditions of Judaism

    • In Orthodox Judaism, a Rabbi is always male

    • In Reform Judaism, Rabbis may also be female

  • The Rabbi is the religious leader within a synagogue who:

    • Interprets Jewish law (Halakhah) and answers religious questions

    • Leads prayers and services in the synagogue

    • Gives sermons and guidance during festivals and Shabbat

  • The word “Rabbi means teacher

    • The major function of a Rabbi is to instruct and guide people in the study and practice of Judaism

      • This will include teaching and explaining Jewish laws and traditions

      • The Rabbi also leads study sessions on the Torah and Talmud

  • The Rabbi will also offer a pastoral role to support and advise individuals and families

    • Jewish people will ask the Rabbi when they have a question about any aspect of their faith, rather than studying the Torah or other texts

    • Rabbis also conduct services for personal events, such as weddings, funerals and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs

What is the significance of the Rabbi in the Jewish faith?

  • The Chazan (Cantor) is an individual who helps lead the Jewish people in songful prayer alongside the Rabbi

    • The Chazan is usually a Jewish male adult who is musically trained

  • They recite and sing prayers on behalf of the community

  • This also involves helping to maintain the correct pace and tone of the service

  • They play a key role during special services, weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and High Holy Days

What is the significance of the Chazan?

  • The Chazan has a significant role, particularly during services in the synagogue

  • They support worshippers by guiding the congregation, especially during complex or unfamiliar parts of the liturgy

  • They also help to make the service more meaningful and engaging

  • The Chazan is responsible for enhancing the spiritual connection through music and emotion

  • The role also preserves tradition by using ancient melodies and prayer modes
