In the UK, a "public school" is actually a type of private school, which might sound confusing at first! These schools are independent and charge fees for students to attend, unlike state schools that are free. Public schools are often very old, with lots of history and tradition, and they can sometimes offer education from primary level up to sixth form. They usually have more facilities and resources than state schools and can offer things like boarding, where students live at school during term time. As part of GCSE Sociology, you might study the role public schools play in society, including how they can affect social class and access to education.
