Paper 2 Overview

Paper 2 (Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing) is the second exam you will take to complete your IGCSE if you are taking the 100% exam route.

Paper 2 in a nutshell

The Paper 2 exam is 1 hour 30 minutes long and is divided into Section A (Reading) and Section B (Writing). The exam is worth 60 marks and counts for 40% of your overall grade. 

The exam is broken down as follows:

  • This section consists of one question about one text taken from the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English Anthology

  • The text may be either poetry or prose

  • You will be provided with the anthology text in the exam

Section B: Writing

  • In this section, you will complete one imaginative writing task from a choice of three

  • You can write to describe, recount or narrate (write a story)

What skills are being assessed?

Paper 2 tests your ability to study and analyse selections from a range of fictional poetry and prose texts. You should study the poetry and prose provided in Part 2 of the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English Anthology in preparation for Question 1. Section B will test your ability to write imaginatively and accurately. Each section of the paper therefore tests certain assessment objectives, and it is important that you are aware of these so that you can demonstrate the skills the examiners are looking for.

  • Select and use relevant and appropriate information from a text to answer the questions

AO2: understand and analyse how writers use linguistic and structural devices to achieve their effects

  • Explore how writers use language to achieve particular effects

  • Explore how writers structure their writing in order to achieve particular effects

  • Show your understanding of the whole extract, supporting your points with close textual references and brief quotations

Section B

AO4: communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapting form, tone and register of writing for specific purposes and audiences

  • Write clearly, concisely and with maturity and flair

  • Follow the conventions of a particular form

  • Adapt your use of language and tone to suit the purpose and intended audience

AO5: write clearly, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, with appropriate paragraphing and accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • Use a wide range of sophisticated vocabulary and vary your sentences

  • Structure your writing fluently and appropriately

  • Write with technical accuracy
