Succession - GCSE History Definition

In GCSE History, succession refers to the process of inheriting or passing on leadership, titles, or power, usually within a monarchy or important ruling family. It's important because it determines who will be the next leader or monarch when the current one dies or steps down. Succession plans can sometimes lead to disputes or conflicts if more than one person claims the right to rule. Historically, these disputes have led to wars and changes in who holds power. Understanding succession helps us learn about how countries and governments have been shaped over time.
