In mathematics, an "operation" refers to a mathematical process used to work with numbers. The four basic operations are addition ("+"), subtraction ("-"), multiplication ("x"), and division ("÷"). More complicated operations may involve combining these, and could also finding powers or finding square roots. Understanding how, and when, to use mathematical operations, in the correct order, is crucial to solving problems.
