Platelets are small, disc-shaped cell fragments in the blood that play an essential role in blood clotting. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets gather at the site and stick together to form a clot, which helps stop bleeding. This prevents excessive blood loss and allows healing to begin. Platelets work alongside other blood components, such as red and white blood cells, to help protect the body and maintain health.
