Progesterone - GCSE Biology Definition

Progesterone is a hormone that plays a crucial role in the female reproductive system. It is produced mainly in the ovaries after ovulation and is important for preparing the lining of the uterus for a potential pregnancy. Progesterone helps maintain the uterine lining if a fertilised egg implants, supporting early pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, progesterone levels drop, leading to the shedding of the uterine lining during menstruation. It is an essential part of the menstrual cycle and works alongside another hormone, called oestrogen, to regulate reproductive health.
