A risk factor is something that increases the chance of developing a disease or health problem. It can include lifestyle choices, such as smoking or lack of exercise, or inherited factors like genes from parents. For example, not eating a balanced diet is a risk factor for illnesses such as heart disease. Understanding risk factors helps us identify possible causes of health issues and how they might be prevented. By recognising them, we can make informed choices to reduce our risk and improve health.
