Status - GCSE Sociology Definition

In GCSE Sociology, "status" refers to the level of respect or importance a person holds in society. It can be influenced by different factors like a person's job, wealth, gender, or family background. Status can be ascribed, which means it's given at birth, such as being part of a royal family, or achieved, meaning it's earned through actions, like becoming a doctor. People often treat others differently based on their status, which can affect how individuals are seen and how they interact within a group or society. Understanding status helps students learn about social structure and inequality.
