Meristem - GCSE Biology Definition

Meristem is a type of plant tissue found in areas where a plant is growing, like the tips of roots and shoots. Meristem cells are unique because they can divide repeatedly to produce new, unspecialised cells, which then develop into different types of plant tissue. This allows the plant to grow, to produce new leaves, stems, flowers or fruits, and to repair any damage. Understanding meristems is important in GCSE Biology, as they are essential to plant growth and development.
