Optimum - GCSE Biology Definition

In GCSE Biology, 'optimum' refers to the most favourable condition or level for something to grow, develop, or function best. For example, enzymes in the body work fastest at their optimum temperature and pH level. If the conditions are not at the optimum, such as being too hot or too cold, enzyme activity decreases. When we refer to the 'optimum' in biology, we mean the perfect conditions for a biological process to happen most efficiently.
