Statins - GCSE Biology Definition

Statins are medicines that help lower the level of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that the body needs in small amounts, but too much can lead to health problems such as heart disease. Statins work by reducing the activity of an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver, which lowers the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream. This helps reduce the risk of conditions like heart attacks and strokes. Statins are usually taken as tablets and are often prescribed to people with high cholesterol or a high risk of cardiovascular disease.
