Stem Cells - GCSE Biology Definition

Reviewed by: Lára Marie McIvor

Stem cells are unspecialised cells that have the ability to divide and develop into many different types of specialised cells. This makes them important for growth, repair, and development. Stem cells are found in embryos (called embryonic stem cells), but some also exist in certain parts of the adult body, such as the bone marrow (called adult stem cells). Scientists study stem cells to better understand how the body works and to explore ways to treat diseases through stem cell therapies.
