Ventilate - GCSE Biology Definition

In the context of GCSE Biology, to 'ventilate' means to move air in and out of the lungs to allow for gas exchange. This is essential because it brings in oxygen, which the body needs to release energy through respiration, and removes carbon dioxide, which is a waste product. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles work together to expand and contract the chest, creating space for the lungs to take in air during inhalation and pushing air out during exhalation. Proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining the correct balance of gases in the blood and ensuring that body cells receive the oxygen they need to function.
