Biography
Michael Mitchell has spent his entire professional career working in the field of Citizenship education
He trained as a teacher at Rolle College in Devon and taught in the county for many years, developing his own programmes of Citizenship education in the early 1970s for Key Stage 3 students
Alongside his teaching career, Michael played a major role in developing Citizenship assessment programmes at CSE, GCSE, AS and A level
He has held numerous senior positions, including Chief Examiner and Chief Moderator in Citizenship and related subjects such as Politics and General Studies, working with a range of national assessment bodies
Michael has designed GCSE, AS and A Level specifications in Citizenship and contributed extensively to the development of national subject content and assessment criteria
After leaving secondary education, he joined the University of Plymouth as the subject leader for the PGCE Secondary Citizenship course, training the next generation of citizenship teachers
Whilst at Plymouth, he successfully secured the DfE national contract for CPD training for citizenship teachers. Working alongside the Association of Citizenship Teachers (ACT) and universities across England, he designed and delivered a Master’s-level programme in partnership with Birkbeck College (University of London)
