Role Models: Exam Skills (AQA GCSE French): Revision Note

The topic of ‘role models’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

Role models: listening

In the listening exam, you need to answer questions by completing the sentences in English. Before you listen, think logically about what type of information may be possible to complete each sentence.

Worked Example

Axel is talking about his role model. Complete the sentences in English.

  1. Axel’s brother is always … 

  2. He helps him with …

  3. He encourages him when …

  4. He is inspired by his …

Role models: speaking

In part 2 of the speaking exam, you will read aloud a text and answer four unprepared questions based on the topic of the text. Here is a question to practise reading aloud on the topic of role models.

Worked Example

Read aloud the following text in French.

Il faut avoir confiance en les autres.
J’aime ma prof parce qu’elle est toujours sympa.
Elle m’encourage à réussir et elle me comprend.
Beaucoup de mes amis suivent des influenceurs en ligne.
Mais leur influence sur les jeunes est parfois négative.

Answers:

  • You should have identified the silent final consonant in words such as toujours, comprend, beaucoup

  • You should have pronounced the sound [gn] correctly

  • You should have remembered that -ent at the end of verbs is silent

Role models: reading

In the reading paper, you need to translate sentences into English. This question will help you to practise your translation skills.

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into English.

  1. Il faut avoir une identité très forte.

  2. Elle n’est jamais embêtante. 

  3. Nous avons parlé de mes problèmes au collège.

  4. Je me disputait souvent avec mon ami.

  5. Il est là quand j’ai besoin d'aide.

Answers:

Here are the correct answers:

  1. You need to /must / it’s necessary to have a very strong identity.

  2. She is never annoying.

  3. We spoke/have spoken/talked/have talked about my problems at school.

  4. I often argued / often used to argue with my friend.

  5. He is there when I need help.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Remember that il faut is a set phrase meaning ‘you need to / must / it’s necessary to’. Il doesn't always mean 'he'.

Role models: writing

In the writing exam, you need to translate sentences into French. This question will help you to practise your translation skills.

Worked Example

Translate the following sentences into French.

  1. My sister likes helping others.

  2. My father always understands my problems.

  3. My parents play an important role in my life.

  4. I would like to be a patient person.

  5. The newspapers wrote about his career.

  1. Ma sœur aime aider les autres.

  2. Mon père comprend toujours mes problèmes.

  3. Mes parents jouent un rôle important dans ma vie.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Make sure that your verb endings are correct when taking about other people, e.g. 'my mum', 'my parents'.
