To talk about your hobbies, you need to be able to:

  • ask about what people do in their free time

  • say what you do and don’t do in your free time and why

  • add more detail with a negative to say what you don’t do

  • Use high-frequency irregular verbs correctly

Some useful words and phrases you’ll need for the topic of hobbies are:

  • Est-ce que tu aimes … ?

    Do you like … ?

  • Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire pendant ton temps libre ?

    What do you like to do in your free time?

  • Quel est ton passe-temps préféré ?

    What is your favourite hobby?

  • Mon passe-temps préféré, c’est …

    My favourite hobby is …

  • Pendant mon temps libre …

    During my free time …

  • You can combine these nouns with verbs that you already know:

    • Je joue un instrument au collège

      I play an instrument at school

    • Je suis membre d’un club de lecture

      I’m a member of a reading club

    • Je fais des promenades quand il fait beau

      I go for walks when it is nice

    • J'écris des articles sur la mode

      I write articles about fashion

  • When talking about musical instruments, use the verb jouer with the preposition de and the definite article:

    • jouer de + le = jouer du

      je joue du piano (I play piano)

    • jouer de + la = jouer de la

      je joue de la guitare (I play guitar) 

    • jouer de + les = jouer des

      je joue des instruments différents (I play different instruments)

Examiner Tips and Tricks

It is important to learn key words for the exam, but you can also add your own personal vocabulary so you can express yourself better. If you play an instrument and might want to talk or write about it, look up the French word and make a note of it.
