To give and understand information about entertainment, you need to be able to:

  • use key verbs in the present tense to say what you read, watch and listen to

  • use different tenses to say what you have or will read, watch and listen to

  • use opinion phrases to discuss TV, books, films and music

  • use the adjective ‘favourite’ to describe TV, books, films and music

  • Use opinion phrases to say what you like and dislike

  • In English we can use the -ing form of the verb or the infinitive after opinion phrases (‘I like watching’, ‘I like to watch’), but in French we always use the infinitive:

    • J’aime regarder la télé

      I like watching TV

    • J’adore lire des romans

      I love reading novels

    • Je n’aime pas écouter de la musique

      I don’t like listening to music

    • Je déteste chanter

      I hate singing

    • Je préfère aller au cinéma

      I prefer going to the cinema

  • Use the adjective préféré to mean ‘favourite’, and make sure it agrees with the noun:

masculine singular

feminine singular

My favourite series is …

masculine plural

Mes personnages préférés, ce sont …

  • Lire (to read), regarder (to watch) and écouter (to listen) are very important verbs for this topic

  • Use them in different tenses to talk about entertainment, and remember there are some irregular forms:
