Let's look in more detail at the types of question in Section B, and how to achieve top marks.

Section B: listening

  • Section B is worth 8 marks at Foundation tier and 10 marks at Higher tier

  • It involves dictation - writing down exactly what you hear in French

  • You will hear each sentence three times - once at normal speed, once in short sections with pauses, and once at normal speed again

  • At Foundation tier, the dictation task will be around 20 words long and you will hear four short sentences

  • At Higher tier, the dictation task will be around 30 words long and you will hear five short sentences

  • At both tiers, the task will include two words which are not on the AQA set vocabulary list

Tips for success

  • It is important that your spelling (including accents) is as accurate as possible

  • Use the two minutes at the end of the exam to check this carefully

  • Although it is very useful if you recognise the words and know what they mean, it doesn't matter if you don't

  • You just need to use your knowledge of phonics and grammar to write them correctly
