Future Plans: Work: Grammar and Phonics (AQA GCSE French): Revision Note
Exam code: 8652
There are two future tenses in French - the near future (going to) and the simple future (will). Let's look at the simple future in more detail.
Simple future
Higher tier only
This grammar is only required for Higher tier.
Use the simple future tense to express ‘will’ when talking about future plans
For -er and -ir verbs, use the infinitive verb (e.g. travailler) and add the following endings:
French | English |
je travaillerai | I will work |
tu travailleras | you will work (informal) |
il / elle /on travaillera | he / she / we will work |
nous travaillerons | we will work |
vous travaillerez | you will work (plural or formal) |
ils / elles travailleront | they will work |
For -re verbs, use the same endings but remove the -e from the infinitive first, e.g. je comprendrai (I will understand)
Four key verbs have irregular stems in the simple future - aller (to go), avoir (to have), être (to be) and faire (to do / to make)
Use the same endings as regular verbs:
infinitive | stem | je form | tu form | il / elle / on form |
avoir | aur- | aurai | auras | aura |
aller | ir- | irai | iras | ira |
être | ser- | serai | seras | sera |
faire | fer- | ferai | feras | fera |
