Life at school: speaking

In part 3 of the speaking exam, you need to describe two photos and then have a conversation with your teacher about the theme covered in the photos. This question will help you to practise describing a photo on the topic of life at school.

Worked Example

Parle-moi de la photo.

life at school

Answer:

Here is an example answer.

Dans la photo il y a des élèves et une prof. Je pense que la prof est sympa parce qu’elle aide les élèves.  Ils sont dans une salle de classe moderne et il y a un ordinateur et des livres. Les élèves portent un uniforme, donc je pense que l'école est en Angleterre, peut-être. À mon avis les élèves sont travailleurs et sérieux et je crois qu’ils trouvent cette matière intéressante parce qu’ils écrivent beaucoup.

In the photo there are some students and a teacher. I think the teacher is nice because she helps the students. They are in a modern classroom and there is a computer and some books. The students are wearing a uniform, so I think the school is in England, maybe. In my opinion, the students are hard-working and serious, and I believe they find this subject interesting because they are writing a lot.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Use the acronym PALM to help you - People and objects, Action, Location, Mood. Look at the aspects of PALM mentioned in the response above:

  • People and objects
dans la photo il y a des élèves et une prof; il y a un ordinateur et des cahiers

  • Action
les élèves portent un uniforme; elle aide les élèves; ils écrivent beaucoup

  • Mood

Life at school: reading

In the reading exam, you will need to identify different tenses and say what people do in the past, present and future.

Look out for time phrases to help you, e.g. ‘tomorrow’, ‘at the moment’, ‘yesterday’. You should also be able to identify tenses from the verb - look out for present tense verb endings, past participles, or a form of aller + infinitive to indicate the future.

Worked Example

Zoé is talking about school. What does she say about each aspect?
Write P for something she did in the past.
Write N for something she does now.
Write F for something she wants to do in future.

Après le baccalauréat, je voudrais travailler dans une grande entreprise. J’aime étudier la physique et la technologie, mais l'année dernière j’ai arrêté d’étudier la politique car elle est une matière ennuyeuse. Je fais toujours beaucoup d’efforts car je veux réussir mes examens. Demain je vais parler avec mon prof de sciences parce que je ne comprends pas les devoirs et j'espère qu’il va m’aider.

Life at school: writing

Foundation tier

In the Foundation writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 50-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are taking part in an exchange with a Belgian school.
Write a short description of your school for the exchange students.
Write approximately 50 words in French.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:

  • school subjects

  • your teachers

  • school facilities

  • the school day

  • your uniform

Answer:

Here is an example response of 48 words.

J'étudie neuf matières, par exemple les maths et le français. J'aime le français car c'est utile. Les profs sont sympas mais parfois un peu stricts. Il y a une grande bibliothèque ici. Nous avons une récréation à onze heures. On porte un uniforme noir qui est assez pratique.

I study nine subjects, for example, maths and French. I like French because it’s useful. The teachers are nice but sometimes a bit strict. There is a large library here. We have a break at eleven o’clock. We wear a black uniform, which is quite practical.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

One way to achieve variety of language is to refer to different people - this response includes 'I', 'they', and two different words for 'we', as well as the impersonal verb phrase il y a.

Higher tier

In the Higher writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 150-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website.
Write approximately 150 words in French.
Describe:

  • the importance of working hard at school

  • how you will improve your grades in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of 151 words.

In my opinion, it is very important to work hard at school if you want to be successful later. When I was younger, I didn’t make much effort and my grades were quite poor. However, now I know that schoolwork is essential for my future. If you are hard-working, I think you can develop good skills and have more confidence. My teachers always say that it is important to be well organised, and I agree with them.
In the future, I am going to try to improve my grades. For example, I find maths difficult, so I am going to ask questions when I don’t understand, and I will concentrate better in class. I will also use the library to do my homework and study with my friends. If I continue to make an effort, I am sure that I will pass my exams and be able to go to university.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

When completing a 150-word writing task, you will need to be comfortable using a range of tenses, as the bullet points will cover two tenses.

This paragraph includes:

  • a range of tenses to match the bullet points - present, imperfect, near future and simple future

  • different subjects - ‘I’, ‘they’, ‘it’

  • a range of conjunctions - cependant, donc, par exemple

  • different opinion phrases - à mon avis, je suis d’accord, je suis certain

  • extended clauses using si

Tick off each bullet point as you cover it, and always check your work carefully once you have finished. Look at the response above to identify where each bullet point is covered.
