The topic of ‘shopping’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others. Let’s use the vocabulary, grammar and phonics we have seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them.

In the listening exam, there will be some multiple-choice questions where you need to select the correct ending for each sentence. This question will help you to practise this.

Shopping: speaking

In part 1 of the speaking exam, you will take part in a role-play. Your teacher will play the part of your friend, and you will ask and answer questions.

  • The role-play lasts between 1 and 1.5 minutes

  • You need to prepare answers to the prompts

  • You need to ask your teacher a question when you see the ? symbol

  • Each response must include a verb, but you don’t need to develop your sentences fully like you would in conversation tasks

This question will help you to respond to role-play prompts on the topic of shopping.

Worked Example

Prepare the following role-play.

  1. Say how often you go shopping. (Give one detail.)

  2. Give an opinion about shopping. (Give one detail.)

  3. Say what you have bought recently and why. (Give two details.)

  4. Say something you will buy in future. (Give one detail.)

  5. ? Ask your friend a question about shopping.

Answer:

Here are some example responses.

  1. Je fais du shopping tous les week-ends.

  2. J’aime acheter des vêtements.

  3. Hier j’ai acheté un cadeau pour l'anniversaire de mon frère.

  4. Je vais acheter un livre.

  5. Quel est ton magasin préféré ?

Shopping: reading

In the reading exam, you may be asked to identify the positive and negative aspects of a topic. This question will help you to practise identifying advantages and disadvantages.

Look for positive and negative language to identify advantages and disadvantages, e.g. opinions (I like, I don’t like), adjectives, and key words such as avantage (advantage) and inconvénient (disadvantage).

Worked Example

You read an article about shopping. Clémentine is describing her shopping habits.
Answer the questions in English.

Je vais souvent au centre commercial, mais je préfère faire du shopping en ligne. Les choses sont moins chères, et c’est plus facile parce qu’il ne faut pas visiter un magasin. Cependant, il y a des inconvénients. Quand on achète des vêtements en ligne, on ne peut pas les essayer. Il faut aussi payer pour poster les produits !

  1. According to Clémentine, what are two advantages of shopping online? [2 marks]

  2. According to Clémentine, what are two disadvantages of shopping online? [2 marks]

Answers:

Here are the correct answers:

  1. things are cheaper / less expensive [1], it’s easier (because you don't need to visit a shop) [1]

  2. you can’t try on clothes [1], you have to pay to post things / products / items [1]

Examiner Tips and Tricks

We can see from je préfère … en ligne that the advantages are mentioned first, and the word inconvénients (disadvantages) helps to identify the negative points.

Shopping: writing

In the writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 90-word response guided by bullet points. The same question will appear on both Foundation and Higher papers.

Worked Example

You are writing an article about shopping.
Write approximately 90 words in French.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Mention:

  • your opinion of shopping

  • something you have bought recently

  • something you want to buy in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of 86 words.

In my opinion, shopping is a lot of fun, but sometimes it’s too expensive. I love buying clothes, however, I don’t like shopping at the supermarket because it’s too boring.
Last weekend, I bought a new red bag for a party, and I think that it’s very pretty. The bag cost twenty euros, but my parents paid!
Next week, I am going to go to the shopping centre to buy a present for my grandmother because it’s her birthday and she wants a painting.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

This paragraph includes:

  • a range of tenses to match the bullet points

  • different subjects - ‘I’, ‘they’, ‘she’

  • a range of conjunctions - mais, cependant, car

  • different opinion phrases - selon moi, j’adore, je pense que

Check that your answer includes a variety of language and that you have written something about each bullet point.
