In the topic of shopping, use demonstrative adjectives to point out items and interrogative adjectives to ask questions about items. Let's look at these grammar points in more detail.

Demonstrative adjectives

  • Demonstrative adjectives are the words 'this', 'that', 'these' and 'those'

  • 'This' and 'that' is the same word in French, and 'these' and 'those' is the same word

  • They must agree with the noun in gender and number

masculine singular

ce

Je voudrais ce chapeau.

I would like this / that hat.

masculine singular (before a vowel or silent ‘h’)

cet

J’aime cet article.

I like this / that item.

feminine singular 

cette

Tu aimes cette carte ?

Do you like this / that card?

plural (masculine and feminine)

ces

Ces sacs sont noirs.

These / Those bags are black.

Interrogative adjectives

  • Interrogative adjectives are the words 'which’ and ‘what’

  • They must agree with the noun in gender and number

masculine singular

quel

Quel chapeau aimes-tu ?

Which / What hat do you like?

feminine singular 

quelle

Tu as acheté quelle carte ?

Which / What card did you buy?

masculine plural

quels

Quels sacs veut-il ?

Which / What bags does he want?

feminine plural 

quelles

Quelles couleurs avez-vous ?

Which / What colours do you have?

  • In French, [que] is a ‘kuh’ sound

  • It is not ‘kwuh’ like the English word ‘queen’
