In the topic of shopping, use demonstrative adjectives to point out items and interrogative adjectives to ask questions about items. Let's look at these grammar points in more detail.
Demonstrative adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives are the words 'this', 'that', 'these' and 'those'
'This' and 'that' is the same word in French, and 'these' and 'those' is the same word
They must agree with the noun in gender and number
masculine singular | ce | Je voudrais ce chapeau. | I would like this / that hat. |
masculine singular (before a vowel or silent ‘h’) | cet | J’aime cet article. | I like this / that item. |
feminine singular | cette | Tu aimes cette carte ? | Do you like this / that card? |
plural (masculine and feminine) | ces | Ces sacs sont noirs. | These / Those bags are black. |
Interrogative adjectives
Interrogative adjectives are the words 'which’ and ‘what’
They must agree with the noun in gender and number
masculine singular | quel | Quel chapeau aimes-tu ? | Which / What hat do you like? |
feminine singular | quelle | Tu as acheté quelle carte ? | Which / What card did you buy? |
masculine plural | quels | Quels sacs veut-il ? | Which / What bags does he want? |
feminine plural | quelles | Quelles couleurs avez-vous ? | Which / What colours do you have? |
Shopping: phonics
In French, [que] is a ‘kuh’ sound
It is not ‘kwuh’ like the English word ‘queen’
