Sport: Grammar and Phonics (AQA GCSE French): Revision Note
Exam code: 8652
To be able to talk about sports, you need to use prepositions with certain verbs. Let's look at this in more detail.
Prepositions à and de
Prepositions are small but useful words which are used before a noun or a pronoun and connect it to another word
Use the prepositions à and de when talking about sport
Use the verb jouer with à, and the verb faire with de
These prepositions have no meaning in the English translations
Use the definite article (the) with sports and activities in French, but not in English
The article sometimes changes when used with à or de:
jouer à + le = jouer au
Je joue au foot (I play football)
jouer à + la = jouer à la
Je joue à la pétanque (I play petanque / bowls)
jouer à + les = jouer aux
Je joue aux échecs (I play chess)
faire de + le = faire du
Je fais du vélo (I go cycling)
faire de + la = faire de la
Je fais de la danse (I do dance)
faire de + les = faire des
Je fais des arts martiaux (I do martial arts)
Use other prepositions to say where, when or how something happens:
Je suis dans une équipe de foot
I am in a football team
Je cours avec mon chien
I run with my dog
Nous parlons après la partie
We speak after the match
Elle a joué contre son ami
She played against her friend
