At the doctor's: writing

Foundation tier

In the Foundation writing exam you need to complete a gap-fill task which is based on your knowledge of grammar, such as verb forms or adjective agreements.

Worked Example

Choose the correct word from the three options.

  • Le médecin dit qu’il faut …………………… au lit.

reste

resté

rester

The correct answer is rester. The sentence means ‘the doctor says it’s necessary to stay in bed’.

We need to use an infinitive verb after il faut. Reste is the present tense je form and resté is a past participle.

  • Ça ne va pas ! J’ai mal …………………… oreilles !

au

à la

aux

The correct answer is aux. The sentence means ‘I am not doing well! My ears hurt!’.

Oreilles is a plural noun. Au is used for masculine singular nouns and à la is used for feminine singular nouns.

  • Eva, …………………… plus de légumes !

manges

mange

manger

The correct answer is mange. The sentence means ‘Eva, eat more vegetables!’.

This sentence uses the imperative - we can tell because there is no pronoun. Manger is the infinitive form and manges is the present tense tu form - we need to remove the -s to turn it into the imperative.

Higher tier

In the writing exam, you need to translate five English sentences into French. There are two marks per sentence. This question will help you to practise translating into French, focusing on Higher tier-only vocabulary.

Here are some tips:

  • Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word

  • Check tenses carefully

  1. I feel weak and ill.

  2. I have injured my leg.
