Je crois qu'ils sont des bénévoles et ils sont contents parce qu'ils aident les autres. Ils veulent faire une différence.

In the photo, I see some young people. They are outside, maybe in a park, and they have found some rubbish. They are going to put it in their bags. There are also bins for plastic. I think that they are volunteers, and they are happy because they are helping others. They want to make a difference.

Choose the correct word from the three options.

  • Beaucoup de personnes qui vivent dans ma ville …………………… besoin de l'aide.

sont

ont

font

The correct answer is ont. The sentence means ‘Lots of people who live in my city need help'.

Avoir besoin is a set phrase meaning 'to need'. Ont is the third person plural form of avoir. Sont is a form of être and font is a form of faire.

  • Il y a un manque …………………… logement.

de

du

des

The correct answer is de. The sentence means ‘There is a lack of accommodation'.

Phrases like 'a lot of' and 'a lack of' are always followed by de + noun, and the definite article is never used.

  • …………………… une solution n'est pas facile.

trouvé

trouve

trouver

The correct answer is trouver. The sentence means ‘Finding a solution is not easy'.

Use an infinitive verb at the start of a sentence to mean -ing. Trouve is the present tense ‘I’ form and trouvé is a past participle.

Higher tier only

In the Higher writing paper, there will be one question where you need to write a 150-word response guided by bullet points.

Worked Example

You are writing a post for your school website.
Your article is about citizenship.
Write approximately 150 words in French.
Mention:

  • why it is important to help others

  • how you will be a good citizen in future

Answer:

Here is an example response of 144 words.

Helping others is very important in our society. Many people live in poverty, and this can cause health problems because they cannot buy medicine. We must share wealth with these poor people, especially during the economic crisis. I am lucky to live in peace, but many people suffer from violence because of war. We must help them because safety is a human right.
In my opinion, everyone has a moral responsibility to be a good citizen. I think that everyone should vote because the government can tackle social problems in our country. In the future, I want to become a volunteer in a local organisation that helps homeless people in my city. I will give them free hot drinks when it is cold and help them to find housing.
