To talk about where you go and how you get there, you need to use the words by, to, and in - these are important prepositions in French. Let's look at them in more detail.
Prepositions
Prepositions are small but useful words which are used before a noun or a pronoun and connect it to another word
Use them to say how you travel, or where to
We often use different prepositions in French and English
The prepositions below mean by, to and in in English:
French | English | use with | Examples | |
à | to / in | cities, towns, villages | Je suis à Paris. | I am in Paris. |
by | travelling by bike or foot | Je vais à vélo. | I go by bike. | |
au | to / in | masculine countries or places | Je voyage au Maroc. | I am travelling to Morocco. |
aux | to / in | plural countries or places | Je vais aux Alpes. | I am going to the Alps. |
en | to / in | feminine countries or places | Je vais en France. | I am going to France. |
by | travelling by a vehicle | Je voyage en avion. | I travel by plane. | |
No preposition is needed with the verb prendre (to take):
Je prends le train
I take the train

At the end of a word, [r] is silent in French

At the start or in the middle of a word, [r] is a sound from the back of the throat
