Hosting - GCSE Computer Science Definition

'Hosting' refers to the service provided by companies that allows individuals and organisations to post a website or web page onto the internet. When a person sets up a website, it needs to be stored or "hosted" on a special type of computer called a server. Hosting companies supply the technology and support needed to make your website visible on the internet. In simpler terms, if you think of a website as a book, hosting is like renting out the shelf space in a library where anyone around the world can come and read it. Hosting is essential for making sure your site is online and can be accessed by people using their web browsers.
