SMTP - GCSE Computer Science Definition

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, and it's a set of rules(protocol) used for sending emails over the internet. When you send an email, SMTP helps it move from your computer or device to the recipient's email server. It works by breaking your email into small parts, called packets, and then reliably delivering them to the right place, ensuring that your message reaches its destination. SMTP only handles sending emails; when you receive emails, other protocols like POP3 or IMAP are used. Understanding SMTP is important for GCSE computer science students because it helps them learn how different protocols enable communication on the internet.
