Food Miles - GCSE Geography Definition

Reviewed by: Bridgette Barrett

Last updated

"Food Miles" refers to the distance food travels from where it is grown or produced to where it is sold or eaten. If the food comes from far away, it has high food miles, while local food has lower food miles. This is important because transporting food over long distances can lead to higher carbon emissions, which can contribute to climate change. Understanding food miles helps people think about how their food choices affect the environment and encourages them to consider buying locally produced items to reduce the negative impact on our planet.
