Rotation - GCSE Maths Definition

In GCSE Mathematics, rotation is one of the four transformations that move and/or manipulate shapes. As the name implies, a rotation involves a shape being turned. A rotation requires three things to be defined

  • an angle of rotation

  • a direction of rotation - clockwise or anticlockwise
(strictly not needed for rotations around 180°; 180° clockwise is equivalent to 180° anticlockwise)

  • a centre of rotation - this is the point about which the rotation occurs - it could be a point inside the shape, on the shape, or outside the shape
