In GCSE Mathematics, the word stratum essentially means group. The plural of stratum is strata. A stratum is a group that is defined by having a particular characteristic or property, which is not necessarily mathematical. Strata are used when collecting data, so that the data is collected in such a way that a certain amount of items/people/etc are chosen from each stratum. Strata could be different colours, different genders, different race. Strata are used when collecting data to help ensure a sample is representative of the population.
