Transformation - GCSE Maths Definition

In GCSE Mathematics, a transformation is the movement or manipulation of a shape/object such that it appears elsewhere on a surface - usually a computer screen - so understanding transformations can be important in creating realistic looking graphics in computer games.

There are four types of transformations you need to know

  • reflection - this will require the equation of the reflection line (aka mirror line)

  • rotation - an angle, direction and centre of rotation are required to mathematically describe this transformation

  • translation - movement across left/right and then up/down - this movement would be described by a vector

  • enlargement - a scale factor and centre of enlargement are required for this transformation
