Melting - GCSE Physics Definition
Reviewed by: Caroline Carroll

Melting is the process when a solid substance changes into a liquid because it has been heated. This happens because the heat energy makes the particles in the solid move faster, breaking the strong bonds that hold them together. For example, when ice (a solid) is heated, it melts and turns into water (a liquid). Each substance has a specific temperature where it melts, known as the melting point. Understanding melting is important in physics because it explains changes of state and help us understand how materials behave.
