Expertise - GCSE Psychology Definition

Expertise refers to having a high level of skill or knowledge in a particular area because of practice and learning. Because experts feel more capable and confident, their behaviour often differs from that of non-experts

In psychology, expertise is relevant in the context of social influence. For example, in prosocial behaviour, experts are more likely to help in emergencies when their skills are relevant (e.g., a trained nurse assisting an injured person). Experts are also less likely to conform when making judgements in their domain of skill (e.g., confident maths students resisting group pressure on numerical answers).
