Modern Living - GCSE Psychology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

In GCSE Psychology, modern living refers to the complex mix of contemporary lifestyle pressures, such as rising economic deprivation (e.g., higher rates of anxiety and depression in lower-income households), urban crowding and social isolation (especially for city dwellers), and an ageing population who may live alone after bereavement or mobility loss.

Together these factors elevate chronic stress and reduce everyday social support, helping to explain why the prevalence of mental-health problems has increased since the mid-20th century.
