The progestogen-only pill, also known as the mini pill, is a type of contraceptive that contains only the hormone progestogen, unlike the combined pill which also contains oestrogen. It helps prevent pregnancy mainly by thickening the mucus in the cervix to stop sperm reaching an egg, and in some cases by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg). To be effective, it must be taken at the same time every day. Because it does not contain oestrogen, it may be suitable for people who cannot take oestrogen for medical reasons.
