Pulmonary Artery - GCSE Biology Definition

The pulmonary artery is a blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. Unlike most arteries, which carry oxygenated blood, the pulmonary artery transports blood low in oxygen so it can receive oxygen and release carbon dioxide in the lungs. After this gas exchange, the oxygenated blood returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins. The pulmonary artery is a key part of the circulatory system, ensuring that the body gets the oxygen it needs to function properly.
